Common Knee Injuries and Conditions
Ligament Injuries
Ligaments connect bones and help stabilize the knee. Tears are common in active individuals and athletes.
- ACL tear: Often happens during sports that involve sudden stops or changes in direction (e.g. soccer, basketball).
- PCL tear: Less common; usually from a direct blow to the front of the knee (e.g. car accident or fall).
- MCL tear: Typically caused by force to the outside of the knee, especially when the knee is bent.
- LCL tear: Less frequent; caused by a force from the inside of the knee.
Meniscus Tear
- The meniscus is a cartilage pad that cushions the knee joint.
- Tears may occur with twisting movements or heavy lifting, especially in sports or during aging.
Dislocations
- Knee joint dislocation: When the bones in the knee are forced out of alignment (serious injury).
- Patellar dislocation: The kneecap slips out of its normal position, usually to the side.
